What Does IPL Stand For & What Does It Do?

IPL = Intense Pulsed Light, also referred to as “Photofacial”

What is IPL?  IPL is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes.

An IPL treatment uses the power of broadband light to improve the appearance of sun spots, rosacea, age spots, and skin texture. The treatment can also be used for hair removal, photo rejuvenation, as well as to alleviate dermatological diseases like acne. It is a popular treatment because its effective, affordable, and non-invasive.

What Do IPL Procedures Do For Your Skin?

A handheld device is passed across the skin delivering pulses of broad spectrum light to the deep layers of the skin. Since the handheld device employs a light to influence the skin on a molecular level,  there is no need for any incisions or injections. You can think of it like a blinking flashlight, sending out scattered wavelengths of light, making an IPL very targeted for specific problem areas or skin concerns.

What Does The IPL Treatment Feel Like?

You may feel a slight warmth sensation as the device passes over each section. IPL is relatively painless.

How Long Does it Take To Heal After IPL?

  • Makeup can be used starting right after the treatment, as long as it is applied and removed very gently.

  • Rarely, there is bruising, which can take 1-2 weeks to heal.

  • For freckles and age spots, it is normal for the spots to look darker for 3-7 days.

  • Crusting can occur, which may last up to ten days.

How Much Do IPL Treatments Cost?

The cost depends on the condition and size of the area being treated. On average the cost can range from $600 to $1,200, being that there may be different costs associated with anesthesia, testing, follow-up visits, or post-procedure skincare. It is important to note that because IPL is considered a cosmetic procedure, most health insurance plans will not cover the cost.

How To Get The Best Results From An IPL Treatment

Skin Preparation: Start 7-14 Days Pre-Procedure

Preparing and stimulating the skin before your procedure can help you to achieve the most optimal skin condition prior to a cosmetic procedure. Using the proper skincare 7–14 days prior to a cosmetic procedure creates healthier skin that supports the renewal of skin post-procedure.

Recommended Daily Skincare Regimen before a Cosmetic Procedure:

  • Cleanse with Gentle Cleanser

  • Apply Regenerating Skin Nectar with TriHex Technology

  • Apply Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer with TriHex Technology
